At 19, I had what most people dream about—a steady, well-paying job as a police officer. The benefits were great—paid sick leave, pension, and a side hustle on top of that. I thought I was setting my family up for life.

But no one ever told me that making money wasn’t enough.

I lived well—nice cars, luxury vacations, designer clothes—it all felt like financial success. But beneath the surface, I was squandering my resources. Month after month, despite my good income, I found myself living paycheck to paycheck, anxiously juggling bills. Everyone around me seemed to be in the same boat—living with recurring debt felt “normal.”

One day, my daughter, eyes sparkling with excitement, asked, “Dad, will I get my puppy for my birthday? You promised!” I froze. My heart sank because I couldn’t afford it. It was like a punch to the gut—I had been earning thousands, yet I couldn’t buy my little girl a birthday gift. That moment of shame and helplessness hit me hard. That night, I barely slept.

I realized that I didn’t have a spending problem—I had a financial literacy problem. I reached out to a coach, and that decision changed my life.

I wrote my ebook, “Brick by Brick – Building Your Dream Financial House,” to give you the basics of financial literacy—everything I wish I had known sooner. My mission is to make financial literacy available to everyone, especially within the Black community. Too many of us are struggling, not because we’re not working hard, but because no one ever taught us the rules of the game.
